Hiring a car in Bali comes with a most delightful twist: the option to rent a car with a driver for less that what you’d probably expect to pay for just the car in your home country. Of course, you can hire a car to self-drive as well, at an even cheaper rate.

Cars may be booked prior to your travels, at the airport upon your arrival or at several kiosks in town offering the service. Booking in advance likely includes a transfer between the airport and agency.

Most quoted rates include the 21 percent Government Tax and Service Charge, but it’s best to verify that before you agree to the rental. Bear in mind also that there’s a three percent surcharge for using a credit card and that the rental fee will be processed in Indonesian Rupiah before being converted to your home currency. The easy way around that – some rental companies accept payment in cash, especially US dollars.

Price depends on the vehicle age and size, so expect to pay less for a smaller or older model. Check that insurance is included. For just a little extra, you can also get an English-speaking driver, usually for up to ten hours per day before overtime rates go in effect.
