Two airports serve the Chinese capital Beijing. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the city’s only international airport and is a major and modern airport that was completely upgraded with the addition of Terminal 3 in the lead up to the 2008 Summer Olympics. The other airport serving the capital is Beijing Nanyuan Airport which handles a large number of domestic Chinese flights.
Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the country’s largest airport and welcomes air traffic from more than 120 international and domestic airports. It is situated 32km from downtown Beijing. It is linked to the city by expressway and the Beijing subway.
The airport features three large terminals including the absolutely massive Terminal 3, and can comfortably handle millions of visitors each year. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, while Terminals 2 and 3 welcome both domestic and international flights. Inter-terminal shuttles transport visitors between the three buildings.
Facilities at the airport are absolutely world-class and in 2009 the airport received recognized international awards as the World’s Best Airport.
The significantly smaller Beijing Nanyuan Airport (NAY) is the base of China United Airlines. Mostly a military airfield, the facility also handles domestic flights to and from many of China’s major regional cities including Chengdu, Urumqi, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou.
Many major and low-budget carriers now offer flights to Beijing airports (BJS).
