Crime has been a concern in Cape Town for many years but if some commonsense habits are embraced then most visitors will not experience this. All car rental companies provide hot and cold air-conditioned vehicles so it is strongly advised that you do not wind your windows down and keep your doors locked, especially when parked at traffic lights and intersections. Also, when parking your rented vehicle, do not leave any valuables exposed.
It is important to remember that you must drive on the left hand side of the road, like in England and Australia. You will need a valid credit card, passport (or plane ticket) and suitable driver’s license. Rates are quite good with a simple rental car costing around $50-85 a day.
Like with all major cities, local drivers may not seemingly appreciate many road rules and Cape Town is no exception. Speeding drivers weaving in and out traffic, taxis not stopping at red lights and double parking are some of the experiences you may encounter, but overall Cape Town is a good city for renting a car.
