Hotels and Historic Beauty of Charleston, SC, United States

Charleston was founded in 1670 and was once the most affluent town in the southern United States. The architecture is historic and elegant. The downtown peninsula, located between two rivers, is a great area for walking, shopping and dining. Be sure to take a carriage ride. You may want a walking tour, guided audio tour or a ghost tour as well. While there, walk out on the long, hospitable pier and enjoy the river. Visit the Artisan Market and see what true treasures you can find. There are art museums and mansion tours. A ferry ride takes you to Fort Sumpter, the fort that played a pivotal role in the U.S. Civil War.

There are parking garages in downtown Charleston, and once there, you can walk almost anywhere you want to go. There are also DASH buses with free downtown routes. Hotels on the city peninsula are upscale inns including a few well-known hotel chains. For lower prices, try hotels along Interstate 26.

For better hotel rates, try the adjacent towns of Mount Pleasant, West Ashley or North Charleston. Wherever you stay, take a tour of an area Southern plantation and take time for the Atlantic Ocean beaches. You'll find public beaches at the pricey Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, and Folly Beach, the most affordable Charleston area beach.
