Flying into Chicago:

Gateways to the Windy City

O’Hare is made up of five terminals, and Terminal Five is where most international flights arrive and depart. Terminal One is mainly domestic. For those spending time here on layovers, there’s plenty of shopping and dining in all terminals, as well as power stations – counters with outlets where you can use and charge electronics. There’s a play area for kids (passengers with tickets only). Terminal Two has an exhibit of WWII fighter planes and even a Hilton Hotel right inside. Shuttle buses and a 24-hour rail service take passengers between terminals. Wi-Fi service is available throughout the airport. Getting into the city is easy on public transportation as O’Hare International is home to a metro, regular train, and bus stop. There are also private shuttle services, like Airport Express, or those provided by many hotels. Taxis to the downtown area will cost upwards of $40. Terminals One to Three have car rental desks and Terminal Five has a special phone to call these desks.

Midway has one terminal and three concourses, A, B and C. In addition to Southwest and AirTran, it is used by Delta, Northwest and Frontier Airlines. There’s Wi-Fi throughout and lots of good places to eat. Both the subway and regular train stop here, so getting into the city is very simple. Airport Express also operates at Midway Airport, as do many hotel shuttles. A cab ride to downtown Chicago will cost over $25. For those renting cars, the desks are near arrivals gates and pick up is in the parking garage on Level Two.

There are also two much smaller airports that serve Chicago: Gary/Chicago International Airport and Chicago Rockford International. Gary/Chicago, 25 miles from Chicago, has been home to several airlines over the years, but does not always have commercial air activity. It’s highly unlikely for travelers to land here. Chicago Rockford is 68 miles outside the city, with one small terminal and two runways. It’s used for cargo carriers, as well as limited flights by Allegiant Air, a small domestic carrier, Direct Air, and Aeromexico. This is also a very unlikely landing spot for travelers, but if you do land here there are many private shuttle and limousine services for transportation to the city.
