Flying into Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo – the Financial and Commercial Capital of Sri Lanka

Expansion projects have been underway in the 2000’s and 2007 saw the Sri Lankan government make the decision to reduce the amount of military aviation at Bandaranaike International Airport to make room for more civilian flights to Colombo. The upgrades may include a second runway that would be able to support the largest commercial airplane in the world, the Airbus A380.

Bandaranaike International Airport is the only international airport in Sri Lanka. Several international airlines fly to Bandaranaike International Airport including the major national airline, Sri Lankan Airlines. Flights to Colombo come from major cities in Asia and select airports in Europe and the United States of America. Passengers from other major destinations can reach Colombo via connecting flights in neighboring Asian countries.

Flying into Colombo, passengers will find themselves 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of the city center. To take a taxi to the central areas of Colombo from the airport will take up to an hour. As Sri Lanka’s major airport and the gateway to the country for most international visitors, the Bandaranaike International Airport maintains a high standard of amenities and facilities to accommodate international travelers from around the world and create a good first impression for the country of Sri Lanka.
