 | | Be Brave in Guangzhou: Rent a Car and Drive Yourself | | | There are, however, car rental options available to the bold and the brave. International chains Hertz and Avis have offices in Tianhe District. Hertz is located on Linhe Xi Lu (Linhe West Road), while Avis is on Huali Lu (Huali Road). There are no car rental agencies represented at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport so it is best to arrange a pick-up with your hotel or tour operator from the airport. Renters must present their passports, visa and driver's license. Most car rental agencies require a deposit. A tourist cannot drive in China unless he/she has a Chinese license. An international driver's permit (IDP) is not sufficient so visitors with an IDP need to convert it to a local license. Licenses issued in Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan are not considered as Chinese license. One of the easiest way for a visitor to have a local license is to go to Hong Kong and convert his/her foreign license into a Hong Kong one and then convert the HK license into a Mainland China license. In mainland China, traffic stays on the right side of the road. This can be initially confusing for drivers who just came from Hong Kong or Macau where traffic is on the left.
