The old airport had a lot of criticism for lack of space, overcrowding and a failure to expand along with curfews and restrictions that prevented 24hour operations. Flying into Guangzhou puts you in the Huadu District and 28 kilometers (17 miles) from downtown Guangzhou. There is a metro line under construction to transport passengers from the airport to downtown but it is not expected to be completed until 2010.
