You can hire a car from these agencies using credit card or cash but you must be 25 years old and present a passport on pickup. Prices for a large range of modern cars start from around 40 Euros to 180 Euros per day with unlimited mileage. Insurance is compulsory but you have the added benefit of 24-hour service at Havana’s José Marti International Airport or in the city. Cuba offers the driving enthusiast a visual feast from the steep mountain slopes to the surrounding sunlit seas. Mountain roads can be pot-holed with treacherous twists and turns but the magical scenery will always persuade you to grab the keys and go. During high season, namely the months of December, January, February, July and August, there are often not enough rental cars, making it imperative to book ahead through a travel agent. You must obtain a good map and guidebook as many of Havana’s streets and surrounding roads are unlit at night and unsigned. Make sure you fill the tank prior to long trips, as gas stations can sometimes be a stretch.
