 | | Renting a Car in Hong Kong: Self-Drive or Sit Back and Enjoy the Ride | | | Avis and Hertz are the major international chains that have branches in Hong Kong. Avis offers self-driving rentals as well as cars with a driver. Avis has a branch at Hong Kong International Airport, with additional branches throughout Hong Kong. Hertz has one location in central Hong Kong and one in Kowloon. Additional companies that are Hong Kong-based also offer rental opportunities, both with and without a driver. Most hotels can assist guests with car rental arrangements. Car rentals in Hong Kong are fairly expensive compared to other places.
Many of the rental prices include the cost of insurance. Check with each company to see their individual policy. Drivers are required to have insurance on the vehicle. A security deposit is also often required. Most companies will not rent to drivers under the age of 25. Hong Kong acknowledges an international driving permit (IDP) as a valid driver's license. The IDP should be issued in the same country as the driver's license. It is wise to have both with you. China does not acknowledge the IDP, so if visitors are planning to venture to the mainland, they should check before driving there.
Remember that in Hong Kong, they drive on the left the same as they do in Great Britain. | | | | | | |
