Hong Kong International Airport, Shenzhen International Airport, and Macau International Airport-Receiving Hong Kong's Visitors

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), also known as Chek Lap Kok for the island on which it is built, serves the city of Hong Kong, China, and the world. Winner of several World’s Best Airport awards by Skytrax, Hong Kong International Airport is a beautifully modern and efficient airport designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Less than five flying hours from half the world’s population, HKIA is the fifth busiest airport in the world and operates the world’s busiest cargo facilities. Direct flights from every continent arrive in HKIA, including daily flights from North America, Europe, and Oceania. The two main carriers are Cathay Pacific and its subsidiary Dragon Air. Hong Kong Express also flies into HKIA.

A highly efficient and comprehensive transportation system serves the airport. The Airport Express connects HKIA Tsing Yi, Kowloon, and Hong Kong Island. This environmentally friendly system departs every 12 minutes, and takes 23 minutes to reach Hong Kong station. Once at the station, passengers may take free shuttle buses to major hotels in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. The Airport Express Tourist Transport Pass allows for three days of unlimited MTR travel on an Octopus card. Buses also connect HKIA with most of the city. The Cityflyer bus is generally cheaper, but slower, than the train. Its E routes are cheaper than A routes, so check out all options in advance.

Taxis, coaches, and limousines are also available to passengers. Red taxis are for destinations in Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. Green taxis are restricted to the New Territories. Blue taxis are for Lantau Island.

Ideal for travelers intending to fly around the mainland, Shenzhen International Airport (SZX) offers a cheaper alternative to HKIA. Airline companies such as China Shenzhen Airlines, China Hainan Airlines, Air China, and China Southern Airlines run regular flights throughout China. Many hotels offer shuttle buses to the airport, and the Airport Express line and MTR area accessible from the airport.

For flying elsewhere in Asia, Macau International Airport (MFM) is another cheaper alternative to HKIA. Air Asia has set up a hub at MFM, flying to destinations such as Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Viva Macau flies to Sydney. Ferry service is available to MFM from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and HKIA.
