 | | Renting a Car in Houston: Gas Up and Go! | | | All rental car companies in Houston require drivers to be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and present a major credit card in his/her own name at the time of rental. International renters/drivers must have a valid driver’s license from their country of origin or a valid international driver’s license. Some companies may have some additional insurance requirements. All companies will note the condition of the car and the fuel level at pick-up and inspect the car again at drop-off for any damage and fuel usage. The renter will be charged for any differences, unless they purchased optional insurance.
A taxi or the bus can get you from downtown Houston to the airport if you choose to drop-off your car in town. Most rental car companies will let you pick up at one location and drop off at another in the area. But your best bet is to pick-up and drop-off your car at the airport. Both Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport have onsite desks for the major rental car companies Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty; Bush Intercontinental from a single, central location at its Consolidated Rental Car Facility.
If renting a car for a longer road trip, check with the individual car rental company to see if they have policies about crossing state lines that affect the final rate you pay. Also, be prepared for additional cost if that trip includes crossing the border into Mexico. | | | |  | | |
