There are no global car rental companies in Kathmandu – most people will either use a local company or utilize the car hire services at the hotel where they are staying. You may pick up a rental car at the Tribhuvan International Airport but it is probably best to get to your hotel first via shuttle or taxi and then investigate the pros and cons of whether car rental in Kathmandu is really what you need.

Certainly if you bring children that require car seats or if you visit in the colder months, then your own vehicle is excellent as taxis will not have car seats and walking may become unpleasant.

You will need a current driver’s license and passport and usually only one person can be nominated as the driver. Renting a vehicle becomes a good option when you visit in a small group but make sure that you do not hire any car on the days when you want to visit “old” Kathmandu as walking is far easier and will provide a much better experience.
