However it's easy to take a taxi or public transport into the city itself, where you'll find plenty of other options. American visitors may not find the big names they're used to but there are major European agencies such as EuropeCar and Auto Europe, and the small local agencies are generally very reliable.
Although luxury car hire agencies are present, you'll find that most agencies in Krakow offer a limited selection of vehicles, so you should book ahead if you have any special requirements. However cars tend to be in excellent condition. You'll need your passport and a credit card to pick up your car, as well as your driving license, which you can use for six months from the date of your arrival in the country. All these items should be kept with you whenever you are driving.
The very center of Krakow is closed to cars in order to protect historic buildings and walkways, but you can drive around most of the city. Try to avoid peak times when traffic can get very heavy. Look out for yellow-clad parking attendants who can sell you tickets which you should display on the inside of your windshield when you park. There are also meters, but they don't give change. Street parking can be hard to find so make sure you memorize the location of useful lots.
