Flying into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport

Nigeria’s two major airlines, Nigerian Eagle Airlines and Arik Air, are both based in and fly to Lagos. Murtala Muhammed International Airport is split into two terminals, one receiving international flights to Lagos and the other receiving domestic flights to Lagos. The terminals are located approximately one kilometer apart but both use the same runways. Currently the Murtala Muhammed International Airport serves over 5 million passengers every year.

The airport had a reputation for being dangerous and unsafe for several years after opening, with burglaries, bribes being demanded from customs officials and general harassments both inside and outside of the terminals and even the airplanes themselves. Thankfully, airport security, general cleanliness and facilities have all been improved over the last decade and there is much less of a stigma attached to flying into Lagos.

Further government approval and funding has already been promised to help cope with the ever-increasing traffic at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The modern day state of the airport is safe enough for international passengers but you should still take extra care with security of your belongings and your funds as you move through customs when flying into Lagos.
