Lisbon Portela Airport is four miles north of the city and adjacent to a major freeway so it's a practical place to pick up a car. You can use your ordinary driving license but will also need to show your passport and, usually, a credit card when collecting your vehicle. Drivers under twenty three cannot rent cars in Portugal although the minimum driving age is seventeen.

Using a seatbelt is mandatory no matter where you're sitting in your Lisbon rental car. Children can only travel in the front if the airbags are switched off. Drink drive regulations are very strict so it's best not to drink at all, and there are lots of speed cameras, so drive sensibly. The Portuguese drive on the right hand side of the road and you should always give way to vehicles coming from the right unless a sign advises you otherwise.

Lisbon's older streets are quite narrow and the city's many hills mean that you can't always see very far ahead. Some drivers find this intimidating, and would therefore be advised to avoid peak times when local drivers are more aggressive. However most of the time you will find driving in Lisbon a pleasant and rewarding experience.
