Named after Kenya's first prime minister, Jomo Kenyatta International has been open since the 1950s. The airport is located in Embakasi, one of the many Nairobi suburbs, and is merely a 15 kilometer drive from the hustle and the bustle of the business district.

The airport consists of a single terminal divided into three separate parts, labeled Units 1, 2 and 3. Unit 3 is primarily reserved for domestic flights, while 1 and 2 are the focus of most of the international arrivals and departures. All flights to Nairobi arrive at either Units 1 or 2.

A number of international carriers offer flights to Jomo Kenyatta International. Among these are African Express, Air Uganda, Air Zimbabwe, British Airways, Air Indian, Air Arabia, Brussels Airlines, EgyptAir, KLM, Iberworld, JetLink Express, Emirates, Sudan Airways, Turkish Airlines, South African Airways, Rwandair Express, Qatar Airways, Precision Air, Nasair, Swiss International Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

A contemporary airport with modern facilities, Jomo Kenyatta International has an extensive baggage claim area, a number of different snack bars, a cafeteria, and offices for booking hotels and renting cars. There are banks and currency exchanges on the premises, and numerous taxi and car hire services make getting into the city without a rental a simple process.
