Oakland International Airport is gaining in passengers each year, with over 15 million people traveling through the airport in recent years. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that flights to San Francisco are often high in cost, while flying into Oakland is often markedly more affordable. The airport is also lauded as North America's most reliable airport, with more on-time flights than at any other facility, which becomes even more amazing when the local weather conditions, including that famous San Francisco fog, are factored into the equation.

The airport is split into two terminals, which are connected by a walkway. Terminal 1 has Alaska Airlines, Delta and Delta Connection, Allegiant Air, Horizon Air, Hawaiian Airlines, Mexicana, United, US Airways and US Airways Express, Volaris, and JetBlue.In addition to flights within the continental United States, a few of those airlines offer service to Honolulu, Kahului, and to a number of cities in Mexico, including Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Toluca. Terminal 2 is exclusively for Southwest, who runs a number of different flights from the airport to cities all over the United States each day, including flights to Albuquerque, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Burbank, and Austin. Southwest also flies to Ontario.
