Rental agencies will also ask to see your passport. Car rental agencies in Okinawa also require drivers to have a loss damage waiver (LDW). Some agencies include the cost of this waiver in their rental price and others keep it as a separate cost item. The important thing to remember is that it is required and protects drivers from financial responsibility should the rental car be damaged or stolen.

Many of the car rental agencies in Okinawa are located in or near the Naha Airport. Those that are close to the airport regularly send shuttle buses to pick up renters from the airport and drive them to the rental counters.

It is fairly easy to get around Okinawa. Drivers are courteous, road conditions tend to be very good and road signs are written in both English and Japanese, but keep in mind that traffic can get very heavy during morning and evening rush hours. Most rental cars come equipped with GPS navigation systems, but many of them give directions in Japanese, so it is a good idea to have a reliable map handy.
