 | | Renting a Car in Ottawa: Enjoy Exploring the City | | | If you fly into MacDonald-Cartier International Airport, renting a car should be simple because all of the major car rental agencies have counters at the airport. But if you’re arriving by train or don’t plan to be near the airport during your stay, the same car rental agencies have rental facilities downtown. At the airport, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National Alamo all have counters. Across the street from the passenger terminal building is the Parkade, where the counters can be found. Most of the car rental agencies will rent a car to anyone over 21, but drivers younger than 25 or older than 60 may incur additional charges because of insurance premiums. A driver’s license is required to rent a car in Ottawa.
Once you have your car, grab a map and hit the road! If you’re a first-time visitor, give yourself a little extra time to get from place to place. There are many one-way streets in the downtown area that make navigation a little confusing at times. If you happen to be in Ottawa during a weekend, keep in mind that parking at the World Exchange Plaza is free, although it tends to fill up quickly. The garage has entrances on both Queen Street and Metcalfe Street.
