Located around 32km from the Arizona capital Phoenix, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) is a hub for budget carrier Allegiant Air which offers direct flights to a number of western and central mainland US cities.
Formerly known as the Williams Gateway Airport and Williams Air Force Base, the airport is a small facility now handling Allegiant Air flight traffic from cities including Bismark, Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, Chicago/Rockford, Grand Rapids, Springfield, Peoria, Sioux Falls and Wichita. Prior to the commencement of Allegiant Air’s services in 2007, the airport was used purely for relief, or unscheduled, purposes when congestion at larger nearby airports became too heavy.
Arriving passengers can transfer directly into Phoenix or to Mesa, where the airport is located, via taxi or shuttle service. There are three companies providing shuttle services to destinations within Arizona. Taxi operators from a number of authorized companies also wait in front of the terminal’s Arrivals area.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) is a small airport and its range of services and dining and shopping facilities is rather limited. While some of the basic facilities can be found, visitors shouldn’t plan on doing too much shopping at the airport. There is no hotel located at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) site, with the nearest accommodations available in Mesa itself.
