Renting a Car in Port of Spain:

Enjoy the Freedom of Independent Travel

Drivers from the Bahamas, Canada, France, Germany, the UK and the USA are allowed to drive in Port of Spain with an international driving permit and a travel document that shows their date of arrival. Visitors from China, South Africa and Vietnam must also be able to show a national license. The speed limit in Port of Spain is 50 mph on highways and 34 mph in densely populated areas. Everyone who sits in the front seat must wear a seat belt, traffic drives on the left and u-turns are illegal as are left turns on red lights.

The traffic around Port of Spain can be difficult during rush hour and it is heavy around Independence Square all the time. There are two major highways in the city that run north and south and east and west. These highways are very reliable, but those that run off of these major roads can be unpredictable and easily affected by poor weather conditions. Tourists should feel safe driving at any time of the day or night, but they should watch for animals crossing roads in the rural areas outside of the city. Also keep in mind that many drivers use hand signals, rather than turn signals, to indicate the direction they’re planning to take.
