 | | Exploring it all: Renting a Car in Punta Cana | | | Avis, Argus, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Global, Europcar and Rhino rentals provide the major options for car rental in and around Punta Cana, and offer competitive rates. Most companies will pick you up from your hotel, and offer a range of drop off spots in town, or at the Punta Cana International Airport terminal.
It’s a good idea to avoid nighttime driving if you can, as roads are usually poorly signposted and dimly lit. Horse drawn carts, zippy motorcycles and unpredictable local drivers may greet you on your journey, but as long as you stay alert, driving around Punta Cana should be a relative breeze, if not an exciting experience. While much of the landscape away from the city center is forest and white sand beach, traffic closer in can become congested. It’s a good idea to opt for a smaller vehicle in good condition, as roads can be a little bumpy when getting from A to B.
As long as you’re over the age of twenty-five, a valid driver’s license from your home country is all that is required for renting a car in the Dominican Republic, and a credit card will be requested in order to cover your booking. Gas stations can be found at the Veron-Punta Cana highway and around the Bavaro area. As always, quality car insurance is recommended.
