 | | Fly into Quito Airport – high altitude arrivals | | | The airport is one of the highest in the world and is nestled in the center of a city that is located in a valley. All that means that expansion is not possible so the airport tends to operate at near or full capacity most of the time.
The airport features one terminal that is divided into international and domestic concourses. The concourses are connected by a pedestrian walkway.
Information counters are located on each concourse and the officers all speak English. There is also a tourist information booth in the international arrivals area. Other facilities include food & beverage outlets throughout the terminal as well as some excellent souvenir shopping options. A post office, US currency ATMs (domestic concourse) and currency exchange (international concourse), bank and medical services are also available.
As the airport is actually located within the Quito city limits, getting downtown is relatively quick and easy. A number of buses plus the government’s Trolebus connect the airport with downtown and other parts of the city. Taxis wait outside the Arrivals Hall and fares into Quito are fixed according to a zonal city grid. A number of car rental agencies including some of the biggest international chains operate at Quito Airport.
An international departure tax payable in US dollars is levied to help fund Ecuador’s new international airport further east of Quito, set to open very soon.
