 | | Arrival at St. Thomas Airport – flying into paradise | | | The airport is on the southwestern corner of the island, approximately 3km west of the capital city Charlotte Amalie. The airport operates 24 hours but the terminal building is only open from 6am until 11pm.
The modern St. Thomas Airport is one of the busiest in the eastern Caribbean, and American and Delta Airlines plus a number of regional operators have daily flights to the island. Direct flights to St. Thomas from the US fly out of Atlanta and Miami. Otherwise most American flights will require a connection in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Passenger facilities at St. Thomas Airport include cafeterias, currency exchange counter, ATMs and a tourist information desk.
Ground transportation from the airport is either by taxi or rental car. Taxis standing by at the airport are ready to transfer visitors to their accommodation or to the docks if they are traveling to one of the other islands. All taxis in St. Thomas are passenger vans and are shared vehicles. When coming out of the Arrivals Hall, visitors should tell the driver of the front vehicle where they want to go and he will either start loading your luggage or direct you to another waiting vehicle. Fares are not expensive and drivers definitely work for tips.
