Rental prices vary a great deal. The best prices are found online with pre-paid (but non-refundable) reservations. Expect to pay around US$350 per week for a compact car like a Ford Fiesta. If you try to rent directly on arrival without a reservation you may be asked to pay up to twice as much. To rent a car you must be over 21 years of age, posses a valid driver’s license and leave a credit card deposit. Always check the insurance options included in the price; full coverage and passenger insurance will cost extra and will usually be offered on your arrival. Other extras include in-car navigation systems and child seats. Young drivers under the age of 25 are often charged a compulsory daily insurance fee.

While most of Old San Juan is accessible by foot, a car rental will give you the freedom to travel beyond the city center and tour the whole island of Puerto Rico.
