The upside of being stuck in traffic, however, is that you will have time to take in your surroundings and get your bearings. The Centro or old downtown district is centered around Praça da Sé, from which the Rua Direita leads to Praça República. To the west of the Centro is the upscale suburb of Higiénopolis, and to the south is Liberdade and the Bela Vista or Bixiga. In Bela Vista, you can catch Sao Paulo’s main thoroughfare, the Avenida Paulista, which will lead you along the edge of the Jardins neighborhood.
Remember when driving in the city that, in an effort to control pollution, Sao Paulo has placed restrictions on which license plate numbers can drive on certain days. Check with your rental agency. Fines on violators can be quite expensive.
