 | | Renting a Car in Shannon: Hit the Road in County Clare | | | Avis, Budget, Dollar Thrifty, Dooley, Hertz, Irish Car Rentals, Sixt, and 353 Car Rental all have kiosks at the airport. (There are no car rental agencies in Shannon City Center.)
Remember that in Ireland, cars drive on the left side of the road; roundabouts go clockwise; country roads are one-lane; and cow-crossing traffic is common. It’s fairly easy to navigate in County Clare, but a clear map is mandatory; Shannon car rental agencies can help you plan itineraries. Bunratty, Ennis, and Limerick are all under a 30-minute’s drive away.
Two hours away is Boyle Abbey, whose violent history and scenic setting make it a fascinating destination for a daytrip. Founded in the mid-12th century, by the 16th century the Abby was destroyed by English soldiers crusading to end Catholic practices. Eight miles from Shannon is the town of Newmarket-on-Fergus, home to Dromoland Castle—another good outing for medieval architecture buffs, despite the fact that the castle is now a luxury hotel.
The 95-mile, circular Lough Derg Drive is a popular excursion, taking visitors through rolling hills and alongside clear lake waters. The villages on this route are pleasant places to stop for lunch and tea. | | | | | | | | | Compare Cheap Car Rentals Deals | | |
