 | | Car Rental and Driving on the Streets of Singapore
| | | Renting a car in Singapore is simple, with facilities available at Changi Airport and in the city itself. However it can be quite expensive, and because of the extra overheads they have to pay, the big companies you're used to renting from may charge more than usual. Unless you can get a discount as part of a package deal with your hotel or flight, it's often better to go to a local company. These are tightly regulated and safe to use, though it's worth paying extra for insurance. Make sure you get a car with air conditioning (easy to find) - you'll need it.
To discourage traffic, there is an extra charge for driving in downtown at peak times and on Saturdays. Don't try to dodge this as you're highly likely to be caught and fined. It's also important to wear your seatbelt in accordance with local laws, no matter where in the car you're sitting. The driving age in Singapore is eighteen and you should drive on the left hand side of the road. Make sure you carry a map (some car rental companies in Singapore provide these for free) as the street signs can be confusing. If you're well organized you'll have a pleasant and enjoyable time.
