Flying to Stockholm Airport – as modern and efficient as you would expect

Daily flights from Stockholm Airport go to and from almost 170 cities throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Arlanda Airport underwent a major renovation in 2006. It is huge and features four terminals. Fortunately it is very well laid out and very well signposted so finding your way around is easy. Two of Arlanda’s terminals – 2 and 5 – service international flights from the more than 70 airlines offering international flights at the airport. Domestic traffic uses terminals 3 and 4. A massive shopping center featuring more than 40 shops, as well as a railway station, is located between terminals 4 and 5. There are two railway stations at the airport which connect directly to downtown Stockholm. The high-speed trains have travelers in the city in around 20 minutes.

Other ground transportation options include extensive bus services that link the airport with a number of locations around Stockholm. The airport’s shuttle service also offers visitors transportation to a number of Stockholm hotels. The shuttle is a viable cheaper alternative to the train and taxis, and can take up to an hour to get to downtown Stockholm. Airport taxis wait outside the terminals and charge fixed fares for Stockholm transfers.

Another option is the Flygbussarna bus network which takes passengers into the city as well as to Stockholm’s other airports. And even cheaper bus option is the SL bus line. Routes #583 and #583X connect Stockholm Airport with Märsta railway station where connecting trains take passengers into the city. Tickets for the SL buses cannot be purchased from the driver. They can be bought at convenience stores inside the airport.

The airport features plenty of ATMs, as well as currency exchange counters, a number of banks, a pharmacy and a chapel. There are dozens of dining options including fast food and takeaway, plus sit-down restaurants. There are four hotels located around the airport.

Stockholm’s other airports include the Stockholm-Broamma Airport which is only 8km from the city and handles domestic traffic only, and the Stockholm-Skavsta Airport which is the city’s second-largest and is located around 100km from the city. The airport handles international flights from all over Europe and the Canary Islands. The Stockholm-Västerås Airport is over 100km from the city and handles mostly domestic traffic, but Ryanair also operates flights to and from London.
