Three airports service the Toronto area including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), Buttonville Municipal Airport (YKZ) and the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), which is the major airport and is located in Mississauga, a city just 17 miles (27 kilometers) from Downtown Toronto.
It is the major airport for a populous metropolitan district that includes a large area surrounding Toronoto, often referred to as the Golden Horseshoe. With passenger traffic totaling over 32 million in 2008, the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) ranked highly amongst airports worldwide in terms of aircraft traffic. Many major Canadian airlines use the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) as a hub, including the national airline, Air Canada, which brings with it all the airlines of the Star Alliance. The airport is easily accessible by road and has several taxi, limousine and express coach services as well as a cheaper bus service. Trains aren’t currently connected to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) but plans are underway to connect the airport to the city centre by rail, potentially eliminating 1.5 million car trips every year.
