Hotels and Fun-in-the-Sun on Tybee Island, GA, United States

Tybee Island is one of the most natural Atlantic ocean beaches left in the United States South. There is plenty to do there besides swim, surf and spend time in the sand, but it offers respite from busy schedules sinc e it is not overrun with tourists in the way that most over-built beaches are. For more outdoor time, rent bikes to ride the streets and sand or kayak the coastal waterways. While you are there, visit the Tybee Island Light Station, which is both the oldest and the tallest lighthouse in Georgia. The Marin Science Center includes hands-on time with aquatic life as well as exhibits about ocean and shore. Two old coastal forts are favorites with tourists. The Fort Screven's Battery Garland dates back to the Spanish American war. Fort Pulaski dates back to the Civil War.

Hotels on the island are limited to vacation rentals, condos and the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast Inn. You can stay in hotels in Savannah, GA, or less expensive hotels on Interstate 95 exits. You will still be close enough at these hotels to enjoy your days at the beach. Food in the area is limited to a handful of restaurants and a single bar. You may want to bring your own picnic. There are bathhouse facilities at the public beach area.
